Homemade Donuts with Chocolate Frosting
These easy-to-make homemade mini donuts are as delicious as they are adorable and are surprisingly fast and easy to make.

Ingredients
For the donuts:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
- 1/3 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 cup flour
For the chocolate frosting:
- 2/3 cup dark chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 tablespoons coffee
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- sprinkles optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease mini donut pans.
- Melt butter just until most of the way melted, then remove from the heat and let the residual heat finish melting it.
- In a mixing bowl, add milk, mayonnaise, sugar, vanilla, and egg, and mix thoroughly. Pour butter in while mixing to incorporate.2 tablespoons unsalted butter, 1/3 cup milk, 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste, 1 egg
- Add baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg to the liquid ingredients and stir. Add the flour and stir slowly, just until the flour is incorporated.1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 cup flour
- Open a zip top bag and place it in a glass, then fill with the batter. Close the bag, and snip off just a little of the tip.
- Squeeze the batter into greased donut pans, filling them only halfway.
- Place into 350 degree oven and bake for 6-8 minutes, until they spring back when you touch them. While donuts are baking, make the chocolate frosting.
- Use a heavy saucepan. Add chocolate, honey, coffee, and butter, then turn the heat to medium low. Stir while the butter and chocolate melt. When the chocolate is almost melted, remove it from the heat and stir until the chocolate finishes melting. Add the powdered sugar and whisk until completely incorporated. - Once the donuts finish baking, let cool in the pans for three or so minutes. Use a fondue fork or other small utensil to loosen the donuts then remove from the pan.
- Dip into the chocolate, twisting to ensure it adheres evenly over the donut.Shake off any extra chocolate frosting, then just barely dip into sprinkles.sprinkles
- Set completed donuts on a cooling rack to finish cooling, then eat immediately.
- They will keep on the counter in a tightly sealed container for up to three days
Notes
- To make dairy-free: Instead of milk, use coconut or rice milk using the same amount. Substitute coconut oil for the butter at a 1:1 ratio. Ensure your dark chocolate is dairy-free – many are. To make vegan: Make the dairy-free changes to your homemade donuts. Additionally, use agave in place of honey and just a touch less as it is slightly sweeter. In place of the egg, use 1 tablespoon of ground chia seeds mixed with 3 tablespoons of water. Use a vegan mayonnaise substituted in a 1:1 ratio.
