These witch hat oreos are a fun and easy treat perfect for the season. They require just a few ingredients, and they’re a great last minute dessert you can make.
You can decorate these witch hat Oreo cookies as much or as little as you choose. I like to use colored chocolate to make trim around the cone of the hat, and you can do this or skip it. It also looks good when you create a trim around the base of the hat – the cookie itself – if you want to add that.
Many witch hats have buckles around the trim, and you can choose to use little sprinkles – I found some great Halloween-themed ones to use – and carefully place it on the trim to finish it off. The best solution is to use a tool like tweezers – cleaned obviously – or something similar to place the decor on the hat band.

What kind of Oreos work best?
When I think about a hat, the brim of the hat is relatively narrow compared to the rest of it. For this reason alone, I like using Oreo Thins for my witch hats.
That said, you can absolutely use any Oreo cookie you prefer for this hat. You can even use the golden Oreos, as the entire cookie gets dipped in chocolate and coated.
What kind of chocolate should you use?
The Hershey’s Kisses are made of milk chocolate, but I found that milk chocolate was too light. Instead, I used semi-sweet chocolate with just a little milk chocolate mixed in to dip the cookies so that the colors come close to matching.
That said, you can use milk chocolate if you prefer or even dark chocolate, especially if you plan to create a band around the Hershey’s Kiss.
When you plan to melt chocolate, you want to use a high quality chocolate and not chocolate chips, as there are additional ingredients in chocolate chips and the like that help them hold their shapes, and they tend to get dry instead of smooth when melted.
For the band, I use chocolate melting discs in Halloween colors. You could do orange, green, even gold or black.
What if my chocolate doesn’t melt well?
Lower quality chocolate tends to not melt nicely, similar to chocolate chips. That said, it is possible to use it.
If you need to use chocolate chips or your chocolate seems dry as it melts, make sure you add a teaspoon or two of vegetable oil to the chocolate as you melt it to ensure that it turns into a smooth liquid. You are better off adding a bit at a time to create the right consistency, as you cannot remove the oil once you add it.
Are witch hat Oreos gluten free?
Oreo cookies contain gluten, but plain milk chocolate Hershey’s Kisses are gluten-free. You can find gluten-free Oreos, and those work well in this recipe to create gluten-free witch hats.
The only other ingredients are the chocolate, colored chocolate melting discs, and the Halloween sprinkle adornments. In most cases, both are gluten-free, but you know the drill to check the package for confirmation as ingredients change constantly.
What tools do you need to make these Halloween treats?
In general, you can make this with what you have at home, but there are some tools that make this easier. If you plan to do any other chocolate work, whether it’s making homemade chocolate truffles or my monster cake pops (another great Halloween treat), some of these tools come in handy.
You probably already have a cookie sheet, and anything that will hold your cookies will work. I like the cookie sheet because it has enough room that nothing touches and they don’t accidentally slide off.
Over the cookie sheet, you need either parchment paper or a silpat. I prefer a silpat because it’s reusable and it releases chocolate more easily.
Chocolate dipping tools ensure that you can easily dip items in chocolate and place them where they will harden. You can use a fork, but items tend to stick to it more than to the chocolate dipping tools.
You also need a bag to pipe the band for the hat, and you can use a sandwich bag or an actual piping bag. While I normally prefer piping bags, because you use so little of the melting discs, the sandwich bag actually feels less wasteful to me.
Lastly, to apply the decor to the hat band, you can use your fingers, but you’re likely to accidentally push the hat off center or smear the band. For this, I prefer to use tweezers to gently place it.
How to Make Witch Hat Oreo Cookies
Place the parchment paper or silpat onto your cookie sheet. Unwrap the Hershey’s Kisses and set out the Oreo cookies.
Melt your chocolate gently either in the microwave in 20 second bursts or over low heat on the stove. I prefer to use a heavy saucepan over the stove to the microwave generally, but either method works.
Place a single Oreo into the chocolate and use your tool to gently flip it over to coat both sides. Scoop under the cookie and gently shake it to remove excess chocolate.
Place it on your silpat or parchment paper and press a chocolate kiss into the center of the cookie. Repeat for each cookie, being sure to leave an inch or two between each on your cookie sheet.
If your house is cool enough, you can let these harden on your counter for 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can put the tray into your fridge to have the chocolate solidify more quickly.
Once the chocolate hardens, melt the colored melting discs and place that into a sandwich bag or piping bag. Snip just a tiny opening in one corner, and pipe a band around the kiss.
Pro tip: I place a bag partly inside out inside a glass to hold it, then scoop the melted chocolate inside. It works well, and then you just invert it and close it.
Immediately use a pair of tweezers or other tool to gently apply a bat or ghost or other seasonal sprinkle decor to the band. Let the melting discs harden, and serve anytime.
To store, place these in a tightly sealed container. They will last for up to a week or two, as they are encased in chocolate, which keeps the cookie from going stale.
PS You need a plan for your extra chocolate
Every time you melt chocolate for dipping, you will have extra because there’s no way to dip into an almost empty bowl. My favorite is to make chocolate bar with the remaining chocolate.
Since you’re likely making these for Halloween, I suggest you make Halloween chocolate bark. Alternatively, you can get creative with it and make anything from a s’mores chocolate bark to an antioxidant chocolate bark.
The melting discs will also likely have a bit extra, as well. You can have fun and make decorated Halloween marshmallows or place it into a container to save for the next time you need it.
