There are so many subscription boxes out there, and I love the ability to try foods I don’t normally eat or to enjoy fresh baked homemade tasting items that take more time and effort to make than what I have.

Do I bake with sourdough? Absolutely. My kids love my sourdough pancakes, and I make a mean sourdough pizza, too.

However, I make sourdough bread less often simply because of the incredible amount of time it takes. Wildgrain is the first bake from frozen subscription box that incorporates sourdough bread, fresh, hand-cut pasta, and artisanal pastries and cookies.

And I bake with their sourdough, too. I’ve made strawberry stuffed French toast and cheesy stuffed garlic pull apart bread and more with it, and it’s SO good!

Who doesn’t love fresh bread you don’t have to make yourself. And I don’t count taking a parbaked loaf from the freezer and placing it in the oven as making it myself, do you?

Everything arrives frozen, and each item is ready – hot and fresh – in 25 minutes or less. You don’t need to plan ahead to thaw anything, as they go straight from the freezer to the oven or pot. Brilliant!

How does the Wildgrain subscription box work?

Once you start your subscription, you receive a monthly box with your favorite frozen sourdough. And yes, it is more than “just” bread.

You can pause or cancel your subscription at any point. If your freezer gets too full, skip a month!

Wildgrain sends you a reminder email three days before your next subscription box gets charged, so you have enough notice to make a decision if you need to reschedule your order, skip it, or cancel.

You receive a UPS confirmation number as soon as your order ships, so you know when to expect it. While your box comes with dry ice – and they calculate how much you need based on where you live – you do want to bring it inside and place it in the freezer as quickly as you can.

How much does Wildgrain cost?

The subscription box costs vary by the type of box you choose, and it includes free shipping with the dry ice needed to keep your frozen items fresh until you bring them inside. There are no hidden fees.

The bread, pasta, and pastries box costs $99 for six items and $168 for 12. For $109, you can choose the six item pastries and desserts box and $188 for 12 items.

You’ll pay the same $69 for six items in the vegan breads and rolls box or standard breads and rolls box and $118 for 12 items. Note that the two breads and rolls boxes do not include the free croissants offer.

What comes in a Wildgrain subscription box?

There are now multiple types of Wildgrain boxes. When you first sign up, you choose from amongst a bread, pasta, and pastries box; a pastry and desserts box; a bread and rolls box; or a vegan bread and roll box. As noted above, you choose whether to select six items or 12 items.

Each box includes the makings for 30 or more individual meals. Obviously the boxes with 12 items contain twice the contents of the six box option.

When you first start, they have their most popular items preselected, but you can update this to choose whichever items sound most appealing to you from the box category you chose.

The bread, pasta, and pastries box lets you choose from all the items below. The only restriction is that you can choose a maximum of six pastries or spring specials in the first. Aside from that, you could choose to do 12 pastas or 12 of a single bread of variety of bread flavors.

The bread and rolls box lets you choose only from the bread options. In the pastries box, you can choose from the pastries and seasonal specials. The only limitation here is that you can have up to 10 seasonal items.

The vegan bread and rolls has the same bread and rolls options, less those that have any animal products. That removes the Bavarian pretzel buns, slow-fermented brioche rolls, and English muffins.

The box contents change each month, but the below list details the options for the April boxes to give you an idea of what to expect.

• Slow-fermented olive oil ciabatta

•  12 ounce package of hand cut fresh tonnarelli pasta
• 12 ounce package of hand cut fettucine
• 12 ounce package of cheese tortellini
• 12 ounce package of potato gnocchi
• 12 ounce jar of marinara sauce

Pastries include:

• Giant chocolate chunk cookies (6 pack)
• Maple Belgian waffles (6 pack)
• Blueberry biscuits (6 pack)
• Parmesan herb biscuits (6 pack)
• Croissants (4 pack) – an option in addition to the free ones

Spring specials include:

• Macarons (12 pack)
• Chocolate lava cakes (2 pack)
• Slow-fermented veggie pizza

You can choose 6 or 12 of these plus… 4 free croissants for the life of your subscription (except for the bread and rolls only options)!

Once you select the items in your box, you can also add on additional items. If there is something in your box you want more of, you can generally add and extra, and there are additional choices like a four pack of giant ginger molasses cookies and wood-fired plain bagels.

Each item includes baking instructions so you know exactly what to do for your fresh sourdough bread, hand-cut pasta, and artisanal pastries. The frozen bread takes the longest to make with a 25 minute bake time, while the frozen pasta is ready in 6-8 minutes.

So how do Wildgrain products TASTE?

I received the mixed box, and I loved everything in it. I admit that I was a little suspicious of the “specialty” sourdough loaves with seeds and nuts and fruit, but they taste amazing.

In fact, my family – usually the picky ones in my house – devoured them so quickly that I didn’t get a chance to eat my fair share.

The bread was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside, just like sourdough is supposed to. The taste difference when you do a true 36 hour fermentation versus the chemical fermentation many bakeries use reminds me why homemade tastes best.

I have also used the classic sourdough loaf for various recipes, and it works well every time.

I also can’t say enough about the fresh, hand-cut pasta. I used to make my own pasta regularly, but it’s incredibly time consuming so I haven’t done it in years.

But oh my WORD is the fresh pasta better than anything I get from a package. It tastes far better than restaurant pasta, as I had forgotten what true fresh pasta is like.

It’s lightly chewy and has a completely different texture that I love. I wish I could order more of it or clone myself to make fresh pasta regularly.

Once you boil the water, simply remove the frozen pasta from its package and place it – still frozen – into the water. As it starts to cook, you can gently stir it to separate it, which ensures you don’t break the pasta strands.

The chocolate chip cookies I had were also delicious, soft and chewy and full of flavor. I loved the extra big size that was perfect for sharing.

I actually cooked the cookies a couple minutes longer than the instructions provide because they weren’t quite all the way cooked, so watch them in your oven and decide if you need to do the same.

And yes, you can definitely bake one at a time for a special treat.

In fact, everything is designed to be enjoyed in small portions. The 12 ounces of pasta are enough that you can make it for one person to enjoy over a couple meals. The sourdough bread loaves are not so huge that they’ll go bad before a single person can enjoy the loaf.

Everything was incredibly tasty and fresh. You can tell that they use quality products for the simple reason that they just taste better.

Plus, it lets me try new flavor combinations – especially in the sourdough bread loaves – that I might not think of or purchase on my own.

How does shipping frozen items work?

Each subscription box gets sent out by UPS with the appropriate amount of dry ice calculated for where you live. This is why deliveries are limited to the continental United States (no Puerto Rico, Alaska, or Hawaii).

The items are packed in an insulated cardboard box with a thick recyclable insulation that keeps your products cold instead of the traditional styrofoam cooler. I appreciate the commitment to be more sustainable.

Again, once your order ships, you receive the UPS shipping confirmation so that you can track your delivery and know when to expect it.

How do I safely handle dry ice?

The short answer? Do NOT handle the dry ice or touch it.

The dry ice in the Wildgrain box comes in a large bag that will have partially evaporated. Carefully move the dry ice out of the way of your items, only touching the part of the bag that has no dry ice near it and is not cold.

Once you remove your items from the box, leave the dry ice inside the insulated portion to finish evaporating. Do not place it on your floor, your counter, your sink, etc as it can damage them.

Under no circumstances should you touch or play with the dry ice, as it can easily give you severe frostbite. Leave it in a well ventilated area and just leave it alone, then dispose of the bag.

Can I reorder my favorite items?

You sort of can now, and I’m so excited that Wildgrain changed this. It was my one disappointment with Wildgrain that I found a favorite and then could not get more of it.

While I cannot get more of everything I love, Wildgrain does now offer the ability to add select items to your box. Currently, you can order the sourdough 3-cheese loaf for $10, a six pack of their amazing giant chocolate chunk cookies for $14, plain sourdough loaf for $8, and a total of nearly 20 items that are a good representation of what they make.

Each month, you get an email about three days before your card gets charged to remind you it’s coming (this is also when you can pause your subscription, etc). The email will have info on the add ons available that month, so you can continue to bolster your shipment with choices each month.

That said, not every product they’ve made is available each month. My recommendation? If you find that you have a favorite seasonal item and it’s available for add on the next month, stock up!

My hope is that they will continue to be successful and grow and be able to offer even more additional one off purchases. That said, since everything is so labor intensive to make, I understand this restriction.

Is Wildgrain allergy friendly?

If you have allergies, they make all their products in the same facilities. If you have severe allergies to milk, eggs, nuts, or wheat, they cannot accommodate those allergies.

Their products are clean, however, and they contain minimal, clean ingredients, so there is no soy or corn in their products. (Go ahead, look at the ingredient list for the bread you bought from the grocery store.)

That said, the fermentation process part of sourdough bread digests the majority of gluten. I have friends who have gluten sensitivities (not celiac) who are able to eat sourdough bread because of this.

Note that I do NOT recommend this without talking to your doctor and getting their approval first. If you have a severe allergy, don’t even try it!

Can I send Wildgrain as a gift?

Yes, you absolutely can send a Wildgrain subscription box as a gift. Simply send it to your preferred recipient instead of your name and address.

Just make sure to make a calendar note to cancel after the number of months you wish to gift. I do hope that Wildgrain creates a true gift option in the future to send a one, three, six, or twelve month subscription to your favorite people.

That said, they do offer a corporate gifting program where you can purchase in bulk. This makes a great employee appreciation gift and would have been a great client gift back in the day when I needed to find something creative and unique to send.

Most of us are looking for more traditional gifts, however, and there are so many opportunities to send a Wildgrain sourdough box.
